Ozone Team Pilots Mitch Riley and Nick Greece, and climbing legend Cedar Wright scored a fantastic day of flying in Northern California. @mitch.riley.84 @nicgreece @cedarwright ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Mitch reports on their recent volcanic mission:
"Nick Greece, Cedar Wright and I met up with a pretty simple goal: fly together, have fun and explore a new place. After 5 hours in the air, and over 100km flown the iconic Mount Shasta started to show a leeside convergence and beckon us nearer. Soon we were hooting and hollering with a huge snowy mountain below us and views of Northern California all around. Flying the snowy, glaciated faces of one of the largest potentially active volcanoes in the US will always be a highlight of my flying."

After opening the season with an impressive 162 km declared goal flight, our friends Wayne Seely and Graham Steel have scored another epic day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Wayne reports:
“We had another great weekend In the Cotswolds. Light wind and a good cloud base prediction saw us towing from the Cotswolds, an early start at 11am for myself and Graham Steel ( both flying our trusty Zeno’s ) we started with a 1000m base heading to tp1 that quickly went to blue conditions for 40km but as we approached tp2 we were connected with clouds which gave amazing 5ms climbs to 2000m giving us an easy run back to goal, 105k declared FAI Triangle in just under 5 hrs. Not epic by alpine standards but a good day for the UK”

"I was waiting for that day since a long time! the day with good snow conditions and a very High Cloud base to reach the very top of Belledonne! Taking off from St Hilaire at 1000m I could climb in pretty rough conditions above Dent de Crolles and then glide straight to Belledonne fighting strong headwind that made it pretty tricky!
After a very low save I manage to climb in a great thermal really high at 3700m over the snowy peaks! Then my dream came true ; I landed on the Grande Lance de Domène at 2790m for a 800 m ski run!
Afterward I took off again and made it back home, flying right over the Grand pic of Belledonne! It was so epic!!"

The Paragliding World Cup in Linzhou, China will take place from the 8th to the 15th of June 2019
The Taihang Canyon Scenic Area, as the name suggests, is one of the most stunning places to fly with its Grand Canyon style topography of red rock gorges and potential for both mountain and flat land tasks.
The first Paragliding World Cup to take place in China was in Linzhou in 1997. The next event was in 2010 with pollution levels making it impossible to see the valley floor from launch, many pilots described the experience as like flying inside a ping-pong ball.
For those who had taken part in 2010, the Linzhou they then discovered at the Pre World Cup in 2018 was unrecognizable. The smog was gone, the carved canyons covered in vivid green vegetation were breath taking. Even the noodles were delicious.
Pilots from 28 different countries will be coming to Linzhou from as far afield as Chile, India, Brazil, Nepal, New Zealand and even Belarus to compete in the World Cup. There will also be a lot of new faces. For 32 pilots, this will be their first World Cup.
The World Cup now has 19 partners, each with a team, making the team competition even more challenging to win.
Keep up with all the action on the PWCA app and the pwca.org website where you can read the live Commentary, follow the pilots on the tracking and keep up with all the scores.
Stay tuned for more.

TASK 4 PWC FRANCE⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With blue skies and snowy mountains, today was a perfect day for paragliding. Due to the persistent north wind upstairs an 86 km task with five turn points zigzagging around the valley was set.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The strategic parts of today's race were when and where to make the valley crossing and whether to stay on the low ridges at the front or go further back into the higher hills.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was a day of strong thermals. The wind coming from different directions around the course made it a tricky task.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The crux part of the course came just before the fourth turn point. Local knowledge helped Julien Wirtz (Enzo 3) break away from the gaggle and use a zone of confluence created by the wind coming up both sides of the ridge to allow him to fly over the ridges and gain a height advantage. He crossed End of Speed with a 1 minute 39 second lead.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In total, 109 pilots swooped down into the goal field much to the delight of the crowds enjoying the sunshine and stunning back drop of Dent d’Arclusaz. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Stay tuned for more on the PWC France 2019.
After a rest day due to bad weather, The PWC returned back to the take off for Task 3. PWC’s Ruth Jessop reports:
This afternoon we went to the Ebaudiaz take off on the east side of the valley, near the top of Le Grand Arc. With launch at cloud base, rain in the valley and a forecast of high winds, nobody was optimistic. A 51.72 km task was set zig zagging back to HQ, with the start opening at 16:35!
Great task setting by a very optimistic committee had everyone taking off for a task which looked totally impossible at the start.

I think I can safely say that everyone flew further than they expected to today. A grand total of 86 pilots made the 51.72 km to goal!

It was a day of deciding how far to go into the mountains, and above all, of being patient.

Today’s winner, European Champion Theo Warden, forgot his radio, entered the Start wrongly and still, somehow managed, against the paragliding world’s finest, to win by 3 minutes and 32 seconds, a stunning performance particularly given the short length of the task.
Today proved once again that in a Paragliding World Cup anything is possible @theowarden
