“I wanted to get in one last snowkite session in 2006. So, I left my home in The Gorge at noon on December 31 and headed to Mt. Hood. I noticed near perfect conditions as I pulled into the parking lot at 6,000 feet elevation. The parking lot was filling up fast with people preparing for a big New Year’s Eve party and fireworks on the mountain. Blue sky and 15 knots out of the west. Kite now, Party later. Yeah.

Launching my Frenzy 10, I headed up the mountain. An hour later I was up on the Palmer Glacier. The scenery was awesome. Illumination Rock was off to the west, the summit and Crater Rock right in front of me, and Steel Cliff to the east. I had entered the crater of this semi-active volcano. Well, that’s when the wind became very swirly as I approached Crater Rock. I was just below the 10,000 foot level of this 11,200 foot mountain.

Two mountain climbers were coming down off the summit and took these photos. They were in crampons and ice axes. What a contrast. Watching a bit of the sunset, I took in the grandeur of this place. I had a chance to reflect back a little on 2006 before riding down full speed into 2007.

Party On!

Ken”
