Snowkiting is an incredible adventure sport that consumes your every thought once you have experienced the exhilarating feeling of carving through the snow powered by the wind.
How Ozone’s passion was sparked….
It all started from our first trip to the Col De Lautaret in France back in 2001, where Rob and I became addicted to this new sport. During our first sessions we were ripping up and down powered by a kite through virgin powder at warp speed while being surrounded by the unspoiled beauty of the mountains. Add to that the pleasure of not having to deal with lift queues or crowds, we realised this was a unique way of exploring and enjoying the snow. Excitedly we rushed back to the Ozone office to tell the rest of the team about our amazing experiences. We were totally hooked and Rob enthusiastically set about designing a kite specifically for Snowkiting. The result was the first ever open cell foil with de-power, the Frenzy was born.
Fast forward twelve years and the sport has spread to almost every snowy corner of the world. The equipment has progressed so much that riders can now use kites to safely power themselves up mountain sides before landing the kite at the top, then free ride down fresh powder faces. The learning process has become so easy with the advent of kites specifically developed for beginners or less experienced boarders and skiers. Arctic and Antarctic expeditions have used kite power to smash speed and distance records that were previously thought to be unbreakable. There is also the freestyle aspect of the sport which has riders doing engaging maneuvers and huge jumps using the terrain as a natural kicker park. However, the most important thing for us is that there are many people across the globe that share our passion and enthusiasm for Snowkiting.
Even though Ozone also produces inflatable kites for Kitesurfing we use foil kites on the snow because of their performance, ease of use and safety. Another great advantage is how small a foil kite packs down, we can carry up to three kites in our backpack to cover all wind speeds you might encounter during an epic backcountry session or expedition. The bar and lines are always left attached to the kite, ready to unroll and fly in an instant which makes launching, landing and packing hassle free. We also believe that foil kites are safer to use on the snow due to the multiple bridling, this distributes the loads evenly reducing the risk of material failure.
Snowkiting remains at the heart of Ozone and we continually strive to help riders push not only personal boundaries but also the boundaries of the sport. Every year we progress our designs with dedication to safety and performance to ensure that every kite delivers the possibility to experience the unparalleled excitement of the sport.
Hope to see you in the snow, Matt Taggart, Ozone co founder
