Things are going great here with snowkiting and the SnowAffair tour. www.snowaffair.com
After leaving the Skyline Snowkite Summit event in Utah we headed for Island Park Idaho on the west edge of Yellowstone National Park. It was great to see 50 snowkiters riding in the vast open terrain of the American West. Cowboy territory. Absolutely beautiful and wide open. We rode at the Hungry Bear General Store where the hospitality overflowed with warm food served in a Mongolian yurt set up beside the riding area.
Super dry and light powder snow with gentle winds created perfect winds for beginners through experts as truck drivers blew their horns at the colorful kites in the sky. We all retreated to the warm atmosphere and giant plates of beef of the Ponds Lodge. Lots of beer, a great raffle of sweet gear, and live music put us over the edge into a deep mountain sleep. The next morning we rode the gravel pits and slashed a few wind drifts. A television crew came out to shoot and interview the few of us that stuck it out to the end. Now our moms won’t think that we are wasting time chasing the wind because we made the evening news. Haa. Good times and great friends.
Our next stop after the holidays was Whistler, Canada. We always love coming here. It is truly a winter playground with big mountains and a great action sport community. We had been super lucky with weather all season and this time our cup runneth over. Too much of a good thing. It dumped snow and shut us down. Great for riding lifts but no kiting since it was full whiteout at the snowkite spots up in the high alpine.
We then headed for the Waterville Plateau in Central Washington where we hooked up with the Seattle crew. We turned a lot of heads in this farm community with 10 kites in the air. A few of us headed over to another spot with great terrain, the Boulder Fields. Four of us had a great soul session into a beautiful sunset. We camped on-site and the next day we hit a new spot that we named Amped, for the amphitheater feel that it had. It has 3 large smooth hills have form a humongous 3-sided bowl. This new site is only 1 mile south of Boulder Fields and has some great backcountry snowkiting - Killer.
And things are about to bust wide open with a very full and exciting schedule starting Friday. Private kite session with the Shred Alert Team, kite clinics at the Outdoor Retailer Backcountry Basecamp in Utah, Powder Mountain SuperFly, Montana Snowkite Rodeo, Idaho Kite Soldiers, and the list goes on and on.
Winter Rules! WooHoo!
