Distance traveled: 200 km AM. Reluctant to get out of our warm sleeping bags, we started the stoves to melt water for breakfast and to fill our Sigg bottles.
Since we’ve crossed the Arctic Circle, the thick clouds have blocked our view of the midnight sun. But today the skies were blue and the sun hovered just above the horizon.
The winds were strong and we launched our small kites.
The compass was strapped to my wrist to navigate north. On cloudy overcast days, we use it often to take a bearing off of the wind, snow or clouds. However on sunny days, we mostly navigate by the sun. At noon, our shadow falls due north, moving 15 degrees per hour. So with a little math involved, it’s quite easy to figure out which way is north. The GPS is only pulled out a couple times a day to double check our location and see how far we’ve gone. At the end of today, after 10 hrs of kite-skiing, our GPS read 200 km!
