Bei der Expo am Monte Grappa sind zwar viele Piloten mit einem Ozone Schirm angetreten, allerdings waren natürlich auch einige Teams mit anderen Marken vertreten. Es wurde ein 8er FAI Slalom ausgetragen. Alex Mateos (Viper 18) und Aurelien Ganaye (Slalom 21) haben die Durchgänge mit imposanten Zeiten von 30 und 32 Sekunden abgeschlossen, und waren somit um 5-6 Sekunden schneller als der nächst platzierte Pilot. Das habt ihr super gemacht, Leute. Wir gratulieren. Das war sozusagen ein großartiger Trainingslauf für die bevorstehenden Französischen Meisterschaften.

Am ersten Aprilwochenende fanden auch die ersten Italienischen PPG Meisterschaften statt. Raffaele Benetti sagte über das Event: „Der Anspruch der Wettbewerbe in Italien kommt dem des restlichen Europas mehr und mehr gleich. Es gibt immer mehr technisch orientierte Durchgänge, die Piloten verfügen über bessere Fähigkeiten und mehr Kenntnisse und sind mit dem besten Equipment ausgestattet.“ Nach dem ersten Event standen 3 Ozone Piloten auf dem Siegerpodest. Sandro Passeri ist zum 7.mal Italienischer Meister geworden, und hat wieder einmal seine Überlegenheit demonstriert.

Das neue OZO Wendegurtzeug kann nun bestellt werden. Das Ganze wiegt gerade mal 530 Gramm und ist eine Kombination aus Rucksack und Gurtzeug. Es ist in den Größen 26 L und 33 L erhältlich. Wenn du das OZO mit dem XXLite kombinierst, bring es als Gurtzeug/ Rucksack zusammen mit dem Schirm nur etwa 1700 Gramm auf die Waage! Es gibt neue Spreizer für professionelle Tandem Piloten: Passend zu unserem neuen leichtgewichtigen Tandem, (dem Mag2Lite), haben wir 2 neue Spreizer Systeme herausgebracht, die zur Wahl stehen. Die leichten Spreizer sind simpel und bringen mit gerade mal 60 Gramm pro Paar extrem wenig Gewicht auf die Waage. Die neuen Soft Spreizer wiegen 382 Gramm, und sind in der Länge einfach an jeden Passagier anzupassen.

Feria was a big event organized by Santiago City to promote outdoor sports. Paragliding and paramotor was a discipline represented by Francisco Fluxa and local pilots from Santiago. Francisco and I made a PPG show over the city of Santiago flying Slalom 19 and Speedster 19, Here is a video: https://vimeo.com/55070059

I travel a lot all around the World with my motor and I have to admit that the warm welcome I received in Chile was wonderful and totally unexpected. As soon as I arrived I had some problems with my luggage (not all of my paramotor arrived) – everything was sorted and organized for me within a few days. I received invitations from local pilots to visit many places in Chile and Argentina to fly PPG with local pilots. I visited all the nearest to Santiago local flying sites such as: Colina, Vizcachas, Maintencillo. I also had the opportunity to fly with Elke Reinarz in Puerto Montt, who is the only female PPG pilot in Chile. Elke’s house is situated on the cliff above the beautiful bay of Couhuin, and we had a great time flying together for several weeks.

Another event, this time in Licanray, was at a lake surrounded by volcanic mountains. Many PPG pilots arrived from Santiago and Temuco. It was the biggest number of Chilean PPG pilots that had ever met in one place in Chile. The weather was wonderful and we enjoyed many hours flying together. The biggest gift for my last flight in Chile was an evening fight to the beautiful Villarrica Volcano. The late hour and the lack of power in high altitude didn’t allow me to climb all the way to the top but I was within 200m of the summit (Villarrica is 2847)! Landing in the campsite after the dark I thought to myself, “next time! At least I have another good reason to come back to Chile.”

“I was sitting at home in France during a cold spell in winter, dreaming of flying my paramotor in the sun… and then I remembered that the Las Candelas event in the south of Spain is the perfect place to fly paramotor in my t-shirt! I checked the weather conditions, called my friend Aurelien, and made a quick decision. 

We packed lots of toys: Macfly Thor 200 paramotors, 3 new Ozone Slalom wings, our Viper 2 20 and new demo Speedster 22 and we decided to hit the road early. Already on thursday we were in the sky over the beautiful lake of Las Puebla de los Infantes. The location of the event, next to magnificant lake, was a perfect playground. Light wind conditions allowed us to play over the water, doing endless footdrags and easy wing tip touches! What a place! 

Sunny weather meant lots of pilots this year at the event. I was happy to show our new Slalom wing and the Speedster 22 to all of them. On Friday our youngest team mate, Nicolas Aubert, joined us and we flew together a lot. He was happy to try the new Slalom 19, which has just arrived for him. We had lots of fun sharing our flying passion with Spanish friends. As every year, we enjoyed the Spanish food and village fiestas with big fires all night on the streets of La Puebla. 

Saturday and Sunday the wind picked up. The conditions were not very stable, but we could still fly the smallest sizes of Slalom (19) and Speedster (16). Sunday afternoon we said goodbye to our Spainish friends and the Spanish sun and hit the road back to the French snow. See you next year!”

My first leg was through the southern end of the WPNR into beautiful flatlands.  Eastwards I could see the Anysberg National Park, and the land unrolling beneath me was soon dotted with curious springbok, twitching their tails in uncertainty as to whether I was a threat.  I flew into a gentle southerly, but with trims open maintained a comfortable 40 km/h ground speed.  Although it was early, the sun breaking through patchy clouds was generating small thermals.  This called for constant throttle adjustments; I tried flying at various levels but eventually settled for cruising at 300ft above ground and riding it out.  After 20 minutes of southward progression I turned west along a valley, rewarded with views of some ruined stone farmhouses and dilapidated kraals.  A hefty eland bull regarded me with contempt while his two cows batted their ears.

The valley widened, and in the distance I could see a large farm, my first accessible bail-out point after flying 50 minutes. I checked fuel carefully.  I had been observing that the wind was very westerly in the valley I had been flying, which was limiting my ground speed and increasing fuel burn.  I wasn’t sure whether this was due to the topography or if the forecast was wrong, but my fuel situation was just acceptable:  more than one-third into my planned route I had used 5 of my 14 litres supply.  To be safe, I decided to shorten the route, and climb through a valley 10km closer.  Turning north, I ran low-level thorough beautiful vlakte devoid of any sign of human influence.  A startled group of rhebok cantered off on a tangent; a single massive but elegant gemsbok shook its long horns at me. I began to climb into the mountains.

The westerly wind was blocked in the valley, and in its absence the thermals had been building.  Feeling the familiar lag of the wing dropping back as we entered a thermal, I throttled back in anticipation of the exit, but after a few seconds was still climbing.  A brain-switch flipped; suddenly I wasn’t a paramotor pilot but an XC paraglider.  Leaving the throttle I threw my weight over, pulled in the trims and was soon lazily circling at 1.8m/sec upwards in a beautiful morning thermal.  What a pleasure…and good for fuel consumption!  The bliss was prematurely terminated; reaching ridge-height the thermal rapidly became turbulent and then broke up.  I checked my drift and realised the cause:  the westerly wind was in fact a north-westerly that had been channelled along the valley, 90 degrees off the forecast!  This was bad news:   1h15 into my flight I had burned 9 litres, and still needed to fly back across a head-wind.  Opening the trims again, I angled towards the only road leading back to the reserve.  A small herd of zebra ran along my path, almost as if to offer encouragement.

Reaching the road I turned and kept low, using the hills to funnel the wind into a tailwind.  My fuel was receding into the bottom of the tank, but now I could see the mouth of Elandskloof and the WPNR ahead.  I gave up on checking fuel checked possible landing fields as they passed.  Coming into the valley, I made a quick radio call: “Witteberg International, WMX approaching low-level from the north, requesting expedited landing runway 01.”  I could hear the laughter in the background as my wife answered from the “tower” (our tent): “WMX, land at your own discretion!”  The Speedster descended me gently through the turbulence, and I took a few minutes to enjoy the silence and smell of mountain fynbos before checking the fuel one last time.  Just over a litre remained… but my tank of experiences was full to the brim.

Der neue Ozone Slalom ist ein schneller und agiler Motorgleitschirm für Intermediate und erfahrene Piloten, die bei hoher Geschwindigkeit enge Kurven drehen wollen. Der Slalom basiert auf unserem sehr erfolgreichen Speedster Design und bietet Piloten, die ihr Motorfliegen zum nächsten Level hin weiterentwickeln wollen – sei das Ziel gute Wettbewerbe zu fliegen oder einfach nur mehr Spaß -  eine solide Basis. Obwohl der Slalom für Wettkampfpiloten, die um Pylonen fliegen, entwickelt wurde, ist er bestens geeignet und ideal für jeden erfahrenen Piloten, der nach einer neuen Dimension von Agilität sucht, und das gepaart mit einfachem Handling, Stabilität und ausgezeichneten Starteigenschaften. Die Stabilität bei hohen Geschwindigkeiten und sein Komfort machen den Slalom auch zu einer guten Wahl für Hochgeschwindigkeits- XC Flüge.

Der Ozone Team Pilot Mathieu Rouanet stellt das Multiball Steuerungssystem vor.

Das Multiball Steuerungssystem ist ausschließlich für den Ozone Slalom erhältlich. Es ermöglicht dem Piloten ein sehr präzises und stabiles Steuern bei hoher Beschleunigung. (Zum Bespiel mit ganz geöffneten Trimmern und durchgedrückter Speedbar). Das System ist in 3 Bereiche mit „Griffen“ aufgeteilt, die eine Vielzahl von möglichen Positionen ermöglichen, ganz nach Bedarf des Piloten. Der Pilot sollte einfach entsprechend seinem Gurtzeug und seiner Armlänge  die Einstellung wählen, die für ihn am angenehmsten zu erreichen ist. Diese Tragegurte sind mit vielen Features ausgestattet, aber dennoch übersichtlich und einfach zu handhaben. Sowohl am Boden als auch in der Luft.

Der Slalom ist dafür entwickelt, um Pylonen herumzujagen und für bodennahes Funfliegen. Durch seine hohe Geschwindigkeit und den Komfort, den er bietet, ist dieser Schirm aber auch für Hochgeschwindigkeits- XC Flüge bestens geeignet. Der Slalom hat die gleiche Flügelform und das gleiche Profil wie der Speedster – und verfügt auch über dessen einfache Handhabung, die Starteigenschaften und den Sicherheitslevel. Das neue Steuerungssystem ist einfach erstaunlich und macht schnelle Kontrollinputs bei hoher Geschwindigkeit sehr viel einfacher. Der Slalom ist nicht nur für erfahrene Wettkampfpiloten, sondern auch Piloten, die regelmäßig fliegen und ihre Fähigkeiten im Pärzisionsflug verbessern wollen, die ideale Wahl.

Alex`s Style ist einzigartig, und er ist eindeutig jedem anderen Piloten in der Szene überlegen. Das Ergebnis von Mathieu bestätigt, dass sein Flügel mit geringer Streckung – der Speedster 19 – durchaus dazu in der Lage ist, die Leistung der „higher level“ Flügel durch Wendigkeit und Geschwindigkeit zu übertreffen. Mathieu berichtet, dass sich der Speedster vergleichsweise einfach anfühlt, und dass er ein sehr zugänglicher Schirm ist. Für viele Piloten bestens geeignet.

Die Gesamtergebnisse der Slalomania 2012 gehen in den oberen Rängen zu 100 % an Ozone – Glückwünsche Jungs! Wir danken euch sehr, dass ihr mit Ozone fliegt.

118 Piloten und Co-Piloten aus 17 verschiedenen Ländern kämpften in 4 Disziplinen: PF1 fußgestartet solo, PF2 fußgestartet Tandem, PL1 single Trike und PL2 doppel Trike. Zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte gab es eine gültige PF1 Klasse der Frauen.

Die guten Wetterbedingungen ermöglichten den Piloten 10 Durchgänge über 7 Tage hinweg: 2 slaloms, precision landing, navigation with limited fuel, navigation for speed, precision navigation with speed declaration or photo finding, eco-distance and pure eco in nice thermal conditions.

Ozone team pilot, Alex Mateos, suffered an ankle injury just 1 week before the competition started. Miraculously, he was able to enter the PF1 class flying his Viper. Alex won all slalom tasks by a comfortable margin but was not competitive enough in the economy tasks flying his Polini 200 engine. It was only after the last economy task that he lost his lead, finishing 2nd overall for a Vice World Champion title. Well done Alex! And we wish you the best for the European Championship in Estonia, 2013.

Ozone Speedsters dominated the PF2 podium, in 1st and 2nd place. French pilot Yann Leudiere with his co-pilot Aundrey were unbeatable from the beginning of the competition, followed by polish couple Ryszard Zygadlo and Patrycja Lejk. Both teams were flying the Speedster 33. The wing showed amazing performance, allowing fast take off and the best speed and agility in all tasks even with the airfield altitude being 940m above sea level.

In the PF1 Female class, Ozone PPG manager, Emilia Plak, flew her Speedster 19m to an overall World Champion Title. Coralie Mateos took 2nd overall, also flying her Speedster 19m.

Emilia Plak: “The Speedster pilots in this competition were all very happy with its performance. Marugan airfield gave us difficult conditions with higher altitude launches in nil-wind conditions. The Speedster was very easy to launch, has amazing top speed and proved very stable in turbulence. In thermals, it felt more like a free-flight wing.”

Alex Mateos: ”I started flying with Ozone and it’s still my choice. I love the Viper series and think it is the best compromise for all types of tasks in classic competition: speed, agility, and economy. This competition was a bit difficult for me because of my twisted ankle. It was hard decision I had to make, just before the beginning of competition it was still very painful but I am very happy I participated!”
