Weekend mountain climbing

Last Saturday at the Ozone demo day in the Pyrenees set up by Benoit from www.ckite.com we managed to get some superb back country mountain climbing done after the intial spot for the event was plagued by windless conditions. Due to the lack of wind I moved off to do some skiing in nearby Pas de la Casa, Andorra and noticed that there was snow being whipped off the ridges near the top of the pass above the town by a strong south westerly.

Quickly I called the rest of the party and soon we were assembled at the car park at the Col d’Envalira (2408m) which sits just at the top of Pas de la Casa. We put up the new Access 8m and a 06 Frenzy 7.5m and made our way up to the top of Peak del Maia, which is around 2700m and has a sheer drop to the North, just the way the wind was blowing.

The deep powder and the gust control of the new kites made for safe kiting and we soon scaled the mountain to the peak. From the top the view was amazing but not as amazing as the ride down, we kept the kites up and we ripped down the slopes to the easy valley below.

A great day kiting which started off more than lack lustre. Thanks to Benoit for the kites, if you want more info on snowkiting in the Pyrenees please contact Iain at www.kitefrenzy.com
