Suffolk Kite festival 2008

News from Appo and the UK Team >>

We were invited to the Suffolk kite festival and arrived a day early to check out the location and have a “pre-fest fly”, we set up camp and got on with the important job of getting kites out and explore this vast site, winds were light so out came the 15mtr Manta II for sure the choice kite for low wind summer fun. The site had loads of natural and man cut features, from long flat grass to tarmac runway sections, the way the grass had been cut back made for some great waist deep exploration.

As Friday morning broke more and more of our fellow flyers started to arrive and a real nice day was had meeting and greeting faces old and new and it wasn’t long before beers started flowing and the party begun. Ozone were going to be providing the entertainment on Saturday night, but that gave us no excuse not to pull out some of the equipment and have a real cool sunset party in the camp.

Saturday we woke to overcast skies and the wind was blowing, after the usual “late morning breakfast/social folk made their way up to the powerkiting area, some huge single line kites/attractions added to this truly spectacular backdrop, and as the fun got underway it gave us a great chance to not only fly but meet not only seasoned flyers but newcomers to the sport at the Ozone display tent.

Chris and Bron from “Surface Tension”- Ozone UK were on hand with the UK team to not only show what makes us tick but to offer some great 1 to 1 advice on kit. A great day.

Saturday night and the party of the year was in full flow.

Never before at a UK kiting event has such a party been witnessed, the marquee was filled with projections, intelligent lighting, dry ice, smoke and a Huge Laser show capped the great sounds being pumped by Appo. The party went on into the early hours of Sunday morning with the crowd cheering every magical tune being dropped. We knew that something real special had just happened.

Sunday….the fun continued.

Being woken by clear blues skies folk again headed onto the kiting area to blow away their hangovers and play. The wind was a little unpredictable but no one seemed to mind when flying was not possible and it was great to see all the riders from various kite companies kicking back, chilling with one another and reminiscing the night prior.

As kit, displays, kites, travel homes were packed away everyone left with big grins knowing something real special had happened.
Bring on next year.
