Starting this year the (BFC) Belgian Flyboard Club organised the “Funny Speed Tour”. It’s an event where every rider gets 15 minutes to ride as fast as possible on a flyboard / mountainboard, powered by either a kite or a kitewing. The top speed achieved is measured by a GPS-device. The first stop of the speed tour was on the 27th of January at Zeebrugge (Belgium).
Because Zeebrugge is not that far from where I live in the Netherlands, I decided to give it a try. I equipped my flyboard with brand new bearings prepared with a thinner lubricant for less resistance and a set of new stiffer rubbers for my skate trucks to prevent speed wobble.
Once I arrived at the beach, we had a short briefing and some time to find yourself a nice piece of hard sand to achieve your maximum speed. If you were convinced you had found the perfect part of the beach, you could get yourself a GPS-device and a bright yellow safety jacket.
I started pretty early because the forecasts predicted fading winds that day, but at that moment the conditions where good for my 9m Instinct Sport. I managed to perform 4 runs in 15 minutes thanks to my friend Stef who helped to walk me upwind back to the place where I started.
The top speed during the event was 64,4 km/h achieved by Ronald. He was riding a kitewing (A kind of surf-sail you hold in your hands.) The top speed achieved powered by a kite was 63,1 km/h and was achieved by me. It was the first time I joined a speed contest, but I’ve learned a lot and it was great to meet the other riders and the people from the BFC.
