What a week! Planes, trains, and automobiles! That was half of it…and the other half was spent on the beach in Hyeres doing the wind dance. At this usually epic venue we somehow ended up with one of the lightest weeks the locals could remember. Fortunately the race committee did a great job of using the wind we got. On day 3 we sailed 5 races in 8-15 kts of offshore breeze with super flat water.

Although it was quick, this was quite possibly the most competitive racing I’ve been in all year. With only 5 races consistency was the name of the game, and Ozone rider Riccardo Leccese killed it in this department. He held it together, posting all top-three finishes. This is exactly what it takes to win a PKRA event.

I had made one huge mistake…dropped my kite while reaching to the finish line of race 2 in 2nd place….total rookie move! Luckily I was able to relaunch my 17m Edge while still standing on my board and finish 4th. That woke me up and I stepped it up from there on. I was stoked on an awesome port-tack start that gave me a good jump in race 4 that I held onto through the finish.

Huge congrats to Riccardo for his first PKRA win. I’m super excited to have another Ozone rider up there with us, and so is he…check out the smile on that guy!!

Ozone takes 3 of the top 5 positions, with Adam Koch also sailing really well in 5th place. He just had a little learning experience about checking the protest times…..the rest of us are just lucky he made this mistake before we had the chance to.

It’s always memorable when you get a session where a single wave may allow more reos than you can count on two hands. After driving over 1000km, we arrived just in time to score the tail end of a 4m swell. In my eagerness to get out, I managed to snap a fin on the first run which made for some out of control bottom turns into very snappy reos. It was an afternoon of long, overhead, glassy waves.

Stoked with a fix, we settled into a week of beach and water time. Kiting most days and SUPing, surfing, snorkelling, sand boarding, etc. The wind was good most days and the waves were big enough to allow long workable rides. Although our return day was approaching, we had noticed an interesting change in the forecast for later that week. With a huge swell forecast we made arrangements to stay an extra week to score the biggest day.

When the day arrived, we chilled for a while waiting for the sea breeze to build. The swell was thundering in. While waiting, we surfed waves in what would usually be a calm, protected lagoon. Out on the reef there were sets steaming through at three to four times overhead.

As is often the case, eagerness got the better of me. The sea breeze was slow to build and I found myself going out solo, totally under powered and staring into the face of some monster waves. The pace and chop on the waves was a real test and on a few of the rides it took everything to hold it all together. With the super light wind it was the first time I have ever managed to challenge the drift capabilities of the REOs. Despite pushing them beyond all reasonable limits, the performance of the REOs was faultless in every way.

With a couple of good mates, we had the wave to ourselves throughout the afternoon. It was one of those sessions where energy levels were surpassed by enthusiasm so the carnage, for some, became high at the end. This was an end of season session that had it all, from adrenaline rush freight train rides to pure bliss and seemingly endless reos on long, glassy waves.
Winter has hit here so we’ll look forward to another awesome season.

Good wind and waves to all!

I just arrived to France after the PKRA Holland in Den Hague. That was the second stop of the PKRA. I’m super stoked with my second position as it is my best result in an International event so far. After my third place in Mexico the month before I’m now ranked 2nd overall on the Pro Tour.

In the first two days of the event we had pretty strong wind conditions so the organisers decided to start with freestyle as the forecast was not looking so good for the rest of the week and freestylers had to do trials to get into the main event. So on day two they already managed to finish the single eliminations and they even started with the doubles. No racing for us.

Day three was the first day of competition for the racers. We completed only one race as the wind was very light. Ozone team mate Adam Koch won that first race and I managed to get a second place on my 13 meter Edge. The rest of the riders where on 17’s and 18’s. I totally chose the wrong kite sizes for this event. That shows how powerful and big the wind range is on the Edge. I just Love it!

We had four more races during days four and five. Adam, Bryan Lake and Riccardo Leccese (Ozone) were alternating top 3 positions in each race so they were very tight and any one could get first place, which actually was not decided until the very last day.

On the sixth and last day of the competition, Bryan was leading the event, close behind followed Riccardo and Adam in third. Nobody was expecting any more wind. Miraculously it came and two more races were completed. Adam dominated both of them scored two firsts places which gave him a very deserved victory by .04 points. He is now leading the overall PKRA ranking.

It is always great seeing Ozone team riders on the podium, two in the men’s division and myself in women’s.

Now we are just here in Hyeres in day 1, waiting for some wind to fill in. Unfortunately the forecast doesn’t show more than 7 knots for the entire week.

I’ll keep you posted!
Núria

The Ozone REO is a dream machine for every kind of Surf-Style kiting. The three strut design translates to feather weight, which is crucial in those moments when the lines go slack, or the breeze is thin.

While riding down the line the kite fades deeper into the wind window allowing you to concentrate on working the wave rather then flying the kite. With the stock bar, the Reo is near impossible to back stall, which makes riding unhooked crazy easy.

The kite is so stable yet lightning fast through the turns. If you find your timing is off when hitting the lip or turning off the top, no problem as the Reo will be where you want it with just a flick of the wrist.

In the looping arena, there is no other contender. This kite loops so fast from it’s center with no delay, which is a must for landing sent strapless airs or low wind tacks. The ability to unspin your lines on the fly is also a bonus that many other control bars don’t offer.

Whether riding strapped, strapless, waves or chop, the Reo is a guaranteed grin maker, and is the ultimate tool to take everyone’s kitesurfing skills to the next level.

I’m here in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, competing in my first PKRA event. It feels great to finally be here with my brother, Johnny, competing on the international scene. There are about 25 racers from more than 10 countries, including 6 women in the fleet.

In the first 3 days we had 7 races total. I rode on all 3 Ozone Edges I registered for the event, 17m, 13m, & 9m, which shows the variety of wind conditions we’ve seen. With the constantly changing wind conditions, we’ve all seen how important it is to be comfortable racing on a kite that’s not quite ideal for the immediate conditions. For the first race of the event, there were riders on all kites between the sizes of 18m and 9m. I’m learning the importance of kite choice verses my competitors, and feel that had I made better kite choices I would have much more competitive.

One of the best female riders in the world is here, Katja Roose, and it’s been fun battling with her for first. I managed to beat her in 2 of the 7 races, and I’m holding onto second place overall for the women. Nuria Goma (Ozone) has been third in every race. Johnny is in first place overall after winning 4 races, with Bryan Lake in second and Adam Koch (Ozone) in third. Once again my local San Francisco guys are dominating the event, but there’s plenty of international competitors who are in the top of the pack. It’s good to see the Ozone Edge holding down 6 of the top 10 places at a pro tour event….

Today the wind was light and offshore, so we didn’t race. The standings stayed the same with Johnny holding down first place, Bernie in 2nd, and Adam in 3rd. I’m stoked on my 2nd place finish in my first ever PKRA event, and ready for the next one! Thanks for all the help Ozone.
