“What a week - I heard about the award evening on Wednesday when the organisers (Ruakaka Recreation Centre) approached me and asked if I would attend the dinner. I had no problem with that as I felt this would be a good place to showcase kite sports. When they arrived back to me with the dinner tickets and my name as a nominee for the Sportsperson of the Year I was very surprised to say the least. The Bream Bay region has sports from the traditional Rugby, Hockey, Tennis, Netball, Squash, Athletics and Cycling to the other popular sports of Surf Lifesaving, Equestrian and Fishing and the uncommon Spearfishing, Multisport and even Snowboarding and Ski-ing (the closest snow is 8 hours away). Having a kiter nominated is a real boost for the sport into the mainstream!

On Friday night we attended the dinner and awards ceremony with some very young and talented sports people being nominated in various divisions. The Awards evening worked it’s way to the highlight of the night the Bream Bay Sportsperson of the Year Award and the biggest trophy of the evening. Even bigger than the trophy was my surprise when my name was called as the Bream Bay Sportsperson of the year for 2006! Having no speach planned I could only speak from the heart and thank the local comunity for embracing this fabulous sport!

Happy Kiting

Su K”
