Ozone Instinct’s 2009 >> Light XC; Sport+; Edge RX

This year brings big changes in both designer and designs as David Pilkington (the good Dr. of Aerodynamics who previously worked for the British aerospace program) passes on the torch of water kite innovation to the very experienced Robbie Whittall (two time world champion of Hang-gliding ‘86 and Paragliding ‘87; designer, test pilot and trimmer).

Although new to water kite design Robbie has been designing the snowkites and previous landkites you love so much for the past 9 years. He took over the water kite designing like the natural he is and has already created a huge buzz of excitement over the ‘09 line. None of this would have been possible without David’s hands-on training and the qualified staff of our Vietnam manufacturing facility producing kites of the highest quality.

We know you have a choice of kites and that’s why we have to shine. There is an Ozone difference that you can tell as soon as you fly one. Our designers are also accomplished athletes whom have a more holistic view of the creation process. We stand proud behind our products providing you with service, support and a promise; to never rest until we’ve made our kites even better! By better we mean that we have listened to your feedback on the ‘07 and ‘08 models and have addressed as many of those issues to make our first generation Robbie ‘09 kites to your satisfaction. We believe in our products and enjoy the creation process for your ultimate riding experience.

Past vs Present

To improve on past designs we made a 4-line kite that works as well and as fast, without pulleys, as a 5-line kite without losing anything in performance and only gaining in simplicity. In the past we have had some feedback about the lack of bar pressure and de-power that left you dead in the water. These new kites have lost the on-off feeling with a more progressive natural feeling throughout the depower range.

This year’s kites have more grunt, more usable direct and progressive power. You know where it is because you can feel and sense it making it easier for experts and beginners alike. These kites are easier to learn on assuring a gentler introduction into the endless world of kiting. For more experienced kiters these kites don’t need to build up the apparent wind speed and are fantastic unhooked.

The issue with the trimmer releasing the back line on previous incarnations resulting in poorer handling making it harder to coordinate your manoeuvre has been resolved. When you pull the trimmer on the ’09’s they still retain really good handling making it easier to find the pop you need for unhooked moves. Previously cruising at full speed and letting the bar out resulted in a quick stop, but now with our new design that transition is both progressive and touch sensitive. Besides flying better they now look better with all new kites having the same colour scheme to create a bold brand identity distinct to Ozone.
