Kari Schibevaag - Hawaii
I have now spent 4 weeks in Hawaii and I have to say like the Americans, it was just amazing. I came to Oahu and I had 2 weeks with a lot of fun there. I was kiting, surfing, looking at the ASP and driving around the island. I got some good days in the water with the kite, but also a lot of surfing. The best part with Oahu was to see the ASP surf contest, it was an incredible event and nice surfing.
After Oahu I went to Maui for the KSP and after testing Lains, I have to say I was a bit disappointed. It was super hard to get in the water with a sharp reef and the waves were braking to the left and the wind to the right. The wind was also super gusty. The KSP had organised the spot at Hookipa and here the waves looked much better, but since it is a windsurfing spot we could not try it before the competitions started.
Of course when the KSP stared there was no more wind again, like normal when there is a competition. I wanted to surf in Hookipa but I think the whole Island had the same idea as me. After driving around I found some really nice places for surf with less people, and I was spending my days there waiting for the wind.
The wind finally came and we stated the competition. It’s a windsurf spot so I did not have any opportunities to test the spot before my heat. My first heat was a bit of finding out how the wave was and I was just happy to pass this one. We did not have many hours to compete so KSP decided after some heats to shorten the competition. The riders with less points had to go out. I have to say I did not agree with this and I feel sorry for the riders that had to go out due to this reason.
I went through with my points and I managed to climb to 3rd place. I am happy with my riding and now I have motivation to keep on going. I have to say thanks to Ozone for making the REO for waves. It’s a really nice kite and this helped me a lot here in Hawaii with the gusty wind.
Now I am on my way home to Norway to celebrate x-mas with my family and I am crossing fingers for a white xmas.
