Going to the Island Phu Qui, Vietnam

Hi everyone,

6 hours from Phan Thiet with a boat, I`ve heard that this island has some good spots for kitesurfing. The people in Mui Ne told me it was a paradise, but the boat trip was really hard. I was just thinking about the good kite-conditions I heard about and forgot about the boat, and in a short while I was on my way to paradise.

The worst day of my life!! The boat trip was supposed to be hard, but what was hard for the people here? I had two friends with me, John and Mats from Sweden. We went in a taxi from Mui Ne to Phan Thiet where the boat was leaving from. When we got to the boat there was people everywhere. They were working on getting the boat ready. There was all kinds of things on the boat: animals, food, motorbikes, bicycles, ropes, plants and so on. The boat was fully packed and ready to go. I tried to go inside to find a seat, but that wasn`t a good idea. There was a lot of people smoking and food everywhere.

I felt sick after just 1 minute in there. Finally I found my seat on my boardbag outside, and the first 10 minutes was really nice. It was sunny and just small waves. After 1 hour the waves got bigger and the people were starting to puke everywhere. The plastic bags with their puke were coming from the inside out, people were just puking where they were sitting, and that was really close to me. Everything was just full of puke and pee: my legs, my boardbag and my camera bag. Mats and John had the same problem. The water from the sea was spraying me and after a while it started to get really cold. I had the Ozone beach-fleece and I think it saved my life that day. Good thing that Matt forgot to bring it back with him after the photoshoot. Lucky me J.  It was the worst boat trip ever. They told me it was a 6 hour boat ride, but it turned out to be nearly 8 hours when we arrived to Phu Qui. I am not looking forward going on the boat again. But I have to go back home sometime…

Phu Qui is a small island, but there was a lot of people standing there when we got of the boat. We got everything ready with the police and found a girl who had a “hotel” for 100 000 dong which is around 5-6 dollars/night. I slept really well that night. I was dreaming about the island, if it was good to kite and about the boat trip home.

The next morning I was cleaning off all my stuff after the boat trip. It was a really bad smell, but after a lot of soap and water it was like new again. My boardbag, my camera bag and my clothes. I got some good help from one of the ladies in the hotel. The people here help you with everything. They are really nice and they make a big effort to help you out. They always smile and say hi. I feel really welcome here on the island.

We were starting to get hungry and we were walking around to try to get some breakfast. We found a restaurant down the street, where some locals were eating. It was soup and eggs on the menu, and I got both. I went to order a coffee (after the food), and then when I entered the store the man behind the bar was losing his coffee out of his hand. He was just standing watching me, and after a while he managed to take my order. I don’t think blond girls are normal here.

We rented a motorbike from some locals and took a trip around the island. They told me it was just 10 minutes to the spot, but with my slow driving it took about 20 min. John told me I was driving in 10 km/h, but I think it was faster.

After some action on the motorbike we found the lagoon and it looked really good. I pumped my Ozone 7m light and went in the water. It was good, clear water, nearly flat and nice nature, but the wind was a bit gusty. I hope it will be better the next days. One thing that is bad. The people here don’t seem to care and they leave all kinds of trash around at the beach. Dirty!

Mats tried my 9m SPORT 08 today and when he came in was it just one BIG happy smile on the face. I asked him about the kite and he just said that this was a good kite.  He also said it was an easy kite to ride and he liked that the bar did not have a lot of pressure.  I think we have a new rider who is going for the Ozone really soon. Or what do you say Mats??

5m Ozone Sport 2008.
I have now been riding the 5 m Ozone SPORT for some days and I can just tell that David has made the best 5m kite ever. I have not tried a better 5m ever in my life, to be honest. It’s not too fast and it’s really stable. It’s good for freestyle/waves and it’s easy on the bar. It’s a bit more power then the Light 5m 2007. Its turning really good and its good for kite loops it’s not loosing its shape when you are looping. I will give the kite 10 out of 10 and a big smile. J It’s hard to find a good small kite. Normally the kite is just made for the schools.
